I use 3/8" tubing with a reducer thru the wall.  I drilled a 1/2" hole 
and pushed the reducer thru it.  My 1/4" ball valve has a Inner Diameter 
of 1/2".  Hence the hole size and the OD of the reducer.  I used a 
Neoprene o-ring to seal the connection.  Not sure how this will stand the 
heat, So far, so good!  I then used a large brass washer to make up the 
difference for tightening since they are not straight threads.

This works great so far.
